Svādhyāya, The Day Self-Study Changed for Me

Aug 10, 2026
Notes From My Sacred CEO Journal

I believe Svādhyāya Isn't About Fixing Yourself,
but Finally Seeing, accepting, and Loving Yourself.

What if self-study was never meant to make you someone new—but to help you remember who you've been all along?

This morning, I found myself sitting quietly with my journal.

Not because I had something profound to write.

Honestly...

I wasn't even looking for answers.

I just needed somewhere to be honest.

The kind of honest that's difficult to find in a world constantly asking us to improve ourselves.

As I sat there, one word kept rising to the surface.

Svādhyāya.

One of the Niyamas from the Yoga Sutras.

It's often translated as self-study.

But somewhere along the way, I think we've misunderstood what that really means.

Because self-study has quietly become self-improvement.

Another book.
Another podcast.
Another certification.
Another personality test.
Another reason to believe we'll finally become enough once we learn one more thing.

I know that cycle well.

For years, I genuinely believed I was growing.

And in many ways, I was.

But if I'm honest...

There was also a part of me hiding inside all that learning.

I loved taking notes.

I loved studying.

I loved understanding why I felt the way I did.

What I didn't realize was that collecting wisdom had quietly become safer than embodying it.

“Because as long as I was still learning...
I never had to risk being seen.

The Day Self-Study Changed for Me

There wasn't some dramatic breakthrough.

No lightning bolt.

No perfect meditation.

Just a quiet realization.

I had become incredibly skilled at observing myself...

without actually allowing myself to be myself.

I could explain my fears.

Name my patterns.

Understand my nervous system.

Talk about limiting beliefs.

But understanding isn't the same thing as trusting.

Information doesn't automatically become transformation.

At some point...
practice has to replace preparation.

I asked myself , What If We've Been Looking at Svādhyāya Backwards?

What if self-study isn't asking,

“What's wrong with me or what do I need?”

What if it's asking,

“What's true for me?”

Those are two completely different conversations.

One searches for flaws.

The other listens for wisdom.

One creates shame.

The other creates freedom.

Maybe the deepest form of self-study isn't analyzing every thought.

Maybe it's becoming curious enough to witness ourselves without immediately trying to change what we find.

That's the Practice I'm Living Right Now

Lately, life has felt both incredibly beautiful and deeply tender.

There have been moments of grief I couldn't rush.

Moments of joy I almost felt guilty receiving.

Moments where my instinct was to make sense of everything before allowing myself to simply feel it.

And every time...

Yoga quietly brings me back.

Not with answers.

With awareness.

Breath by breath.

Choice by choice.

It reminds me that awareness itself is healing.

Not because awareness fixes us.

Because awareness reconnects us to the present moment.

I Think This Is Why So Many Yoga Teachers Stay Stuck

Not because they don't know enough.

Because they've mistaken preparation for practice.

They keep studying "How to?"instead of practicing showing up consistently.

They keep studying marketing instead of serving and learning.

They keep collecting certifications instead of trusting the wisdom that's already alive inside them.

I know.

Because I lived there too.

For years.

I believed another credential would finally make me feel qualified.

Instead...

The women who needed me were simply waiting for me to trust myself enough to show up and share their next step.

You don't need another certification.

You need to take ONE brave step.

A Moment I'm Still Practicing

I'm still practicing noticing when curiosity quietly becomes criticism.

I'm still practicing listening to my body before I ask the world what it thinks.

I'm still practicing believing that who I am today is worthy of being seen—not because I've mastered life, but because I'm willing to live it honestly.

Maybe that's what Svādhyāya has been trying to teach me all along.

Not to become someone wiser.

But to become someone more willing to tell myself the truth with love.
