How to Start a Yoga Business Before You Feel Ready

Stop Trying to Build Your Yoga Business Before You’ve Practiced It

I have wasted a lot of time trying to figure things out that I could have learned much faster by actually doing them.

I wish I could tell you I stopped doing this years ago.

I haven't.

I can still convince myself that if I think about something long enough, research it enough, map out every possible direction and get just a little clearer first, I'll somehow protect myself from making the wrong choice.

I can make overthinking look very responsible.

Very strategic.

Very productive.

Especially when I care deeply about what I'm creating.

Because underneath all that planning is usually something much more vulnerable.

I want to know it's going to work before I risk wanting it this much.

There it is.

That's the part that's harder to admit.

It isn't always that I don't know what to do.

Sometimes I don't want to choose until I know the choice will work.

And business doesn't give us that deal.
Neither does life, really.

Lately, I've been noticing this same tension in the women sitting across from me in coaching.

Not because they're doing anything wrong.

Because I recognize it.

Three women in particular have stayed with me.

Completely different women. Different stories. Different dreams. Different businesses.

But somewhere in each conversation, I found myself bringing them back to the same place.

They were trying to figure out things they hadn't given themselves a chance to experience yet.

And I realized...

This is one of the places I think differently than a lot of business coaches.

I don't think you need to have your whole yoga business mapped out before you start.

I don't think you need your forever niche.

I don't think you need a perfectly packaged signature method.

And I don't think more planning will give you the certainty you're hoping it will.

Because some answers only show up once your ideas leave your notebook and meet another human being.

I've learned that in my own business.

And over the last few weeks, I watched it happen three times.

I watched it happen three times

One of the women I’ve been coaching came in with so many beautiful ideas.

Breathwork. Yoga nidra. Somatics. Mudras. Mental health support. Retreats. Community.

She could see pieces of the business everywhere.

She just couldn't see how they belonged together.

And I could feel the pressure underneath it.

Which one do I choose?
What do I call myself?
What is the business?

But the more she talked, the less interested I became in choosing one of her modalities.

Because I kept hearing something underneath all of them.

She wanted to help people become more resilient in their actual lives.

Not just feel peaceful for sixty minutes on a yoga mat.

She cared about what happened when they went home. When work was stressful. When relationships were hard.

When life was life.

Eventually, we found the words:

Everyday Resilience.

And she sent me something afterward that stopped me.

“My ideas have a home.”

That.

That is what I want more women to experience.

Not the relief of finally throwing away fourteen ideas so they can obediently pick one.

The relief of realizing their ideas were never as disconnected as they thought.

They needed a home.

Last week I wrote about finding the thread connecting all those ideas.

But finding the thread isn't the finish line.

Now she gets to do something with it.

Teach it. Talk about it. Put it in front of people. See what they respond to. Notice what she loves and what changes when her work meets another human being.

An idea doesn't become a business just because we gave it a beautiful name.

It becomes something real when another person experiences it.

We don't learn yoga by figuring it all out first

Imagine walking into your first yoga class and saying:

“I'd really like to know exactly what my yoga will look like five years from now before I get on the mat.”

You wouldn’t.

You'd begin. You'd wobble. You'd notice. You'd come back.

And your body would teach you things your brain couldn't have figured out beforehand.

So why are we expecting business to work completely differently?

Why are we expecting ourselves to know our perfect niche before we've helped enough people?

Why should we know our signature method before we've watched someone move through it?

Why are we creating five offers before we've sold one?

And why are we waiting for confidence before we've given ourselves any evidence that we can do the thing?

I don't want you building your whole staircase.

I want you standing on the first step.

Another client was already designing the staircase

She was thinking about free content, paid content, private work, digital offers, group coaching, retreats and how much she needed to make to eventually leave part of her job.

And I love that she was thinking about the life she wanted her business to support.

That's important.

But we were getting ahead of ourselves.

Because underneath all those future offers was a much more important question.

What does she actually help someone do?

So we went back.

As we talked about the overwhelmed woman she wants to help, a pattern started appearing naturally.

Notice → Regulate → Reframe → Respond

There it was.

Not because I handed her a framework.

Not because we needed something clever to put on Instagram.

It was already showing up in the way she thought about helping someone create space between what happens to her and how she responds.

And now I'm much less interested in whether she needs three offers or seven.

I want to see what happens when she uses that with real women.

Because something changes when an idea leaves your head and meets another human being.

You hear the question you hadn't considered.

You notice where someone gets stuck.

You realize the thing you thought was obvious is the thing that changes everything for her.

You discover the part you love teaching.

You hear the language your people actually use.

And somewhere inside all of that, you get clearer.

Not before you begin. Because you began.

This is the part I think we've gotten backwards

We talk about clarity and confidence as if they're supplies you need to gather before you're allowed to start.

Get clear.

Get confident.

Then go do the thing.

I don't buy that anymore.

I think sometimes we're asking women to produce confidence without giving themselves anything to feel confident about.

"Confidence needs evidence , evidence you create by taking consistent action."

Evidence is built by :

Teaching the class, helping someone, sharing your story, create and offer an invitation for your offer, and charge for your work.

By doing these things you tell your beautiful brain,

Someone said no and I was still okay.

Someone said yes and shared “That I helped.”

Little by little, your nervous system has something new to work with.

Oh,We do this now.

That's how I think self-trust gets built too. Not because you finally eliminate doubt, Because doubt shows up and you stop automatically handing it the steering wheel.

Still waiting to feel clear enough to begin?

Your Sacred CEO Archetype can help you recognize the pattern keeping you in preparation mode and see what needs to shift so you can finally move.

SHOW ME WHAT’S KEEPING ME STUCK →

The third woman reminded me why this matters so much

Her work comes from something deeply lived.

Healing. Survival. Yoga. Nervous system work. Creativity. Learning to feel like herself again.

She wants to help other women move beyond the place where healing becomes their entire identity and begin living.

Eventually the words became beautifully simple.

Heal Create Live

But those words aren't the work.

They're a way of holding the work, the real discovery comes next.

How does she help someone move from one to the next?

Where does someone need more support?

What actually creates movement?

What does she discover once real women begin moving through the experience?

That's where her method becomes hers.

And this is why I want us to stop treating our first ideas like declarations we're going to be legally bound to for the rest of our lives.

Your first offer is allowed to teach you.

Your first class is allowed to change.

Your method is allowed to emerge.

Your niche is allowed to become more specific because you finally understand the person you're helping.

You're allowed to learn your business by being in your business. Give yourself permission to take action Now and be a novice.

Because this is part of your daily practice too

The more women I coach, the less separate business feels from yoga to me.

We already understand that knowing something intellectually and embodying it are not the same thing.

We understand returning and We understand staying present when something feels uncomfortable instead of immediately escaping it.

Then we begin to understand that mastery doesn't come first.

Experience does...

Real business's require These 3 Things

Regulate → Take Action → Integrate

You don't need to bulldoze through fear, and you don't need to wait until fear disappears.

Notice what's happening. Stay with yourself. Take the next real action.

Then look at what happened.

What did you learn? What felt alive? What surprised you? What needs to change?

That's how your business starts becoming embodied instead of theoretical.

And that's what these three women really taught me

They didn't need me to give them more.

They needed space to hear what was already there.

Then they needed help choosing what to do with it.

That distinction feels really important to me right now.

Because there is an entire industry ready to convince you that the reason you haven't built the thing you want is because you're missing something.

Another certification. Another strategy. Another funnel. Another answer.

And sometimes you do need more information.

But sometimes you know plenty.

You just haven't used what you know long enough to trust it and turn it into lived wisdom.

So ask yourself a different question

Instead of:

What should my yoga business be?

Ask:

What am I ready to put into the world?

Not forever, simply Right now.

Who do you want to help? What do you already know that might help her?

What could you create, teach, share or invite her into that would let you find out?

Then do that.

I believe your business will tell you much more about what it wants to become once you stop demanding the entire answer before you're willing to move.

That's the work I'm becoming more and more interested in.

Helping women take everything they've learned, everything they've lived and all those ideas rolling around in their heads and turn them into something another woman can actually experience.

I've been creating something around that quietly.

A place to get it out of your head.
Onto the page.
Into a decision.
And eventually into the world.

I'm not telling you everything about it yet. 😏

But the more women I coach, the more certain I am about what it doesn't need to be:

Another place to collect more information.

You already know more than you’re using.

If you're tired of collecting ideas and ready to understand the pattern that's keeping you circling them, start here.

You don't need to build the entire business today.

You don't need to know where this will lead five years from now.

And you don't need to become a different woman before you're allowed to begin.

Choose something.

Put it into the world.

Let it teach you.

Then use what you learn to take the next step.

Because I don't think you build the perfect yoga business and then finally become confident enough to lead it.

I think you become her while you're building it.

And that feels a whole lot more like yoga to me. 💗
